Non-Toxic Oral Care for Kissable Breath

How many of you can say your oral hygiene products are toxic free?! Probably only a select few of you reading this can, but don’t worry! I used to be the same way. Over the years of eliminating toxins from my everyday life, my toothpaste, mouth wash, and even my toothbrush was something I took a long, hard look at. And now that I’m pregnant, dental care has become even more crucial in my everyday routine.

These everyday products that we use daily can often get overlooked. But today I am sharing my favorite non-toxic oral care products.

For this post, I am partnering with Smile Brilliant to assist them in unveiling their new electric toothbrush, the cariPRO Ultrasonic! I was extremely thrilled to start working with them as I’ve been scoping out the perfect electronic toothbrush for myself and husband. There are so many toothbrushes on the market that offer a variety of features at different prices that it can be overwhelming. Smile Brilliant offers everything you need for your oral care regimen and at an affordable price. Plus, you’ll have a chance to receive Smile Brilliant’s new toothbrush as well!

Non-Toxic Oral Care for Kissable Breath

Starting with the basics, toothpaste. We don’t think of toothpaste as something that could be toxic. After all, it cleans our mouths and gives us fresh breath, right?! Except it’s not that simple! Most toothpastes on the market contain ingredients that you wouldn’t dare think about ingesting if you knew the long-term damage they could do. The downfall is companies do not have to disclose these harmful chemicals.

Some harmful chemicals to look for in your toothpaste may include…

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Artificial sweeteners

Propylene Glycol

Diethanolamine (DEA)

Aside from finding a chemical-free toothpaste, you also want to make sure you are using a toothbrush that is right for you! Did you know there are so many toothbrushes out there? They range from soft to hard bristles, big or little brushing heads, and even the shape and materials they’re made from can affect your brushing needs. This is where Smile Brilliant comes into play.

Smile Brilliant’s new electronic toothbrush, the cariPRO Ultrasonic, covers all of your brushing needs- and that’s why I love it so much! What grabbed my attention was the five different brushing modes (clean, whiten, sensitive, gum care, and massage). Each brush setting has its’ own unique vibrating pattern and speed to achieve the perfect brushing experience. I personally love the clean feature as well as the whiten and massage! Another really cool feature about this electronic toothbrush is it actually shuts off after two minutes and pauses every thirty seconds. This feature doesn’t allow you to over, or under brush.

Fun fact, this is actually my first electronic toothbrush! Prior to the cariPRO I was using a manual bamboo toothbrush. So, you could imagine my excitement when Smile Brilliant reached out. My teeth and mouth have never felt so clean! One more thing I want to point out is how affordable this toothbrush is! It comes with a charging base, extra brushing head, and manual to explain what each setting offers. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t found an electric toothbrush that didn’t cost an arm and leg. If you want your own cariPRO Ultrasonic electronic toothbrush keep reading to find out how you can receive one!

Another oral care product that is often overlooked is mouthwash. You either use mouthwash or you don’t, but what’s inside of it is what really matters. I personally use mouthwash and can’t ever see myself not using it! Have you looked at what ingredients are in yours?

Here’s a list of what to avoid when purchasing mouthwash…

Chlorhexidine gluconate

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol)

Hydrogen peroxide

Methyl salicylate

Lastly, I want to touch on one thing that all dentists tell us is important to do but, half the population probably doesn’t do it- flossing. Yep, you know you hate answering that dreaded question, “how often do you floss?”. I hate to be another person telling you this but, it really is important. Think about all of the pieces of food that get stuck in your teeth that your toothbrush can’t always get. Pretty gross, huh? Not mention the effect it can have on your gut health.

Just like toothpaste and mouthwash, even dental floss can contain harmful chemicals. Aside from the chemicals, most floss and floss picks are plastic too, which is harmful to the environment.

What’s harmful about floss?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFC’s)

So, why are all of these chemicals harmful and important to avoid?

Many of the chemicals and toxins we find in beauty products, including our oral care products, are endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors can cause serious health problems such as cancer, pre-term and low birth weight babies, early puberty in young girls, and undescended testicles in boys. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Specifically, in oral care products, these chemicals can also alter out taste buds, making anything we eat after brushing taste bitter.

At the end of the day, I could type up a whole laundry list of reasons why each chemical is harmful. However, if you want more information a simple Google search will tell you a lot.

My favorite non-toxic oral care products

Thieves toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss

Schmidt’s (toothpaste)

Tom’s of Maine (toothpaste and mouthwash)

Dr. Bronner’s (toothpaste)

I hope this blog post inspired you to check the ingredients in the products you are using and re think your oral care regimen. I understand no one is perfect and we are all a work in progress. Making small changes a day, like swapping out your Crest toothpaste, can make all the difference.
