Let’s Talk, PERIOD(s).

Let’s talk periods! Yes, I said it, PERIOD. You know the slight bit of hell that us women go through each month to let us know we aren’t pregnant? Yeah, that’s it.

By just reading those first few sentences how many of you feel maybe a little uncomfortable or embarrassed? It’s totally fine if you do, I used to! But let me show you that it’s totally natural to love your period, okay not fall head over heels in love with it, but to not be ashamed of it anymore!

Let’s Talk, PERIOD(s).

For as long as I can remember, well since I got my first period, a woman’s menstrual cycle has been kept quiet and rarely ever talked about. Most women feel embarrassed when talking about their periods, men are supposed to be disgusted by them, and society shouldn’t speak, think, or believe in them…but WHY?!

It’s 2018, and it’s time to put the taboo of periods to rest and start talking about them.


Just love it, that’s how! This may be easier said than done, but it truly is that easy! As women this is something we can’t control. It is a part of Mother Nature blessing us with all she has to offer. However, the thing we CAN control is how we react to it.

Let’s start simple, accepting that you’re not alone and almost all women are experiencing what you are going through. Start to express gratitude whenever it’s that time of month, it means you’re healthy if you have a regular period! Thank Mother Nature for her gift.

Begin to treat your period as something that is a part of you and not something that is fighting against you. Again, having a (regular) period is healthy. Your body is doing what it is supposed to do. With that said, start to take note of how you feel, the foods you crave, and the interests you desire around your time of month.

Accepting your period as part of you leads me to my next point- cycle syncing. I wrote a whole blog post all about it here, so go give it a read. Cycle syncing allows you to sync your everyday activities to whatever phase you are in, making your period more desirable than dreadful. Learn to work with your body, not against it.

Choose products that will benefit that certain time of the month. Purchase products that are good for YOU and your body, the environment, and products that can help someone else, too. 


This isn’t a topic I am going to spend a lot of time on, but it is important to this overall post. Please, please, please do not feel pressured to go on birth control because your friends are, your doctor said, or because you feel like it’s the only option. (DISCLAIMER- I am not saying all birth control is bad (there are some good ones out there that aren’t natural). There are many hormones and chemicals in birth control that may stop short term problems but will cause long term problems in a few years.

I want you to know you can learn about your signs, symptoms, and cycle without controlling it by artificial hormones.

Yes, I know birth control is most commonly used to prevent pregnancy. I get that and I’m also here to tell you there are several ways to track your fertility without hormonal birth control.

When know, love, and accept our periods, it can be a lot easier to make better choices for when that time of month rolls around. As I already mentioned, choosing products that are good for you, your body, and the environment can make you appreciate your period a lot more.

In fact, choosing a non-toxic option, i.e. chemical free tampons and pads, can help decrease your period symptoms. More times than not feminine hygiene products are filled with chemicals, especially fragrance. These chemicals are actually disturbing your natural production of the hormones your body is already producing (or not producing).

When you choose a less toxic product you’re not only helping yourself but you’re also helping the environment.


What to look for when searching for non-toxic feminine hygiene products-

Organic cotton

Fragrance or perfume free

BPA free

Free of chemicals, rayon, and synthetics

Not Chlorine bleached (to make them dioxin free)

The brand, Cora, I mentioned above has been my go-to tampon brand for the last year. I have nothing but good things to say about them and they’re mission is amazing! They also recently came out with pads, liners, and body cloths which is my personal fave!

Essential oils. As if you already couldn’t have guessed. Did you know there are several essential oils to help support your time of month (and hormones) naturally? Orange is a favorite of mine as well as Progessence Plus.

The book Woman Code I have talked about this book numerous times here on my blog and Instagram but I seriously can’t stress it enough- this book is AMAZING. It has taught me more than I thought I could ever know and learn. It’s what truly helped me love my period and my beautiful female body.
