Why I Ditched the Chemicals and Started Living a Toxic-Free Life

Every story has a beginning, and today I am sharing mine. A little over two years ago I received a message from someone who I now call a friend and an amazing mentor, but back then she was one of my college instructors. She asked me, in so many words or less, if I would be interested in joining her team. Team of what and who, is what I thought. Then she went on to explain what she was offering, which was Young Living Essential Oils. Extremely hesitant, I messaged her back with several excuses and reasons as to why I didn’t think it was a good idea. Long story short, I caved in and accepted her offer. Little did I know how much her message that day would change my life.

If you have been following along on my journey, then you probably know where this blog post is headed. For about two years I have been making small (and really big) changes to live a better, much healthier, and non-toxic life.

I like to think the very beginning of my story started the day I was born, but since then there have been several chapters making up this grand story called my life. However, the story I am telling today is still writing itself.

I wish I could say I was living a non-toxic lifestyle since I was born. That that’s how I grew up and why I became so passionate about this topic, but that’s not the case. I grew up in a pretty average household. I ate and did things like most of you and my parents they did too. It wasn’t until 2016 that I really started to take a look at what I was using, eating, and putting on my body and in my home.

Once I began learning how to use essential oils it was like I entered a whole new world I didn’t know existed. It was a world filled with so much knowledge and inspiration to live a better life. Being introduced to essential oils really opened up my eyes to all of the harmful toxins and chemicals we use on an everyday basis.

And if you’re anything like me, when you’re this passionate about something you eat up as much information as you can get your hands on! I was completely shocked by some of the articles I read and documentaries I watched. How did I live so long without knowing any of this? Better yet, WHY do we allow ourselves to live like this.

A quick Google search will tell you that more than eighty-four thousand chemicals are put into America’s food and products; and that these chemicals are what cause cancer, endocrine disruption, and metabolism and endocrine problems. And that’s just the tip of the very large iceberg.

Looking at cosmetics, over thirteen thousand chemicals are in beauty products alone. That means the average woman applies around five hundred chemicals onto her body before breakfast.

Scary stuff, huh?

It doesn’t end there though.

We are all familiar with plastic and its’ harmful effects. We also know it’s bad for the environment as a whole. What makes it so harmful though? The most common toxin found in plastic is BPA (did you ever see a plastic container read “BPA free”?). BPA, or bisphenol A, is a chemical used to make plastic, plastic. The body recognizes chemicals, like BPA, as hormones. This means when we are exposed to these toxins are bodies start to produce more or less of the hormone it’s mimicking or causes endocrine disruption. Specifically, BPA is just about identical to the hormone estrogen. So, when our bodies our exposed to BPA, our systems react to it as an overload of estrogen in the body. This can cause short and long-term effects that vary.

Although it is impossible to avoid every chemical and toxin, there are easy ways to start eliminating toxic products in your everyday life. Essential oils were what got me to switch to cleaner products and only continued to encourage this lifestyle. While essential oils aren’t the only way to begin your non-toxic journey, they are sure a great start! (Make sure you are using essential oils that are 100% pure and natural- shoot me an email if you have any questions).

I know, for me, eliminating all of the everyday chemicals I once used, has made all the difference. From brain fog, bloat, rashes, energy levels, and everything and anything in between, adopting this lifestyle has changed all of those horrible things I once suffered from.

This is the big “why” when it comes to why I’m so passionate about this lifestyle. I know the difference it has made for me personally, as well as strangers, friends, and even my husband. If you’re looking to start making some changes I recommend picking just one item a month to swap out. By six months you’ll have six cleaner products, and, in a year, you may even be completely toxic free! The important thing to know is no one is perfect and it’s impossible to be one hundred percent toxin free, so do what you can with what you have.
