Cycle Syncing: What is Cycle Syncing & My Experience

Hi loves! Today on the blog I am going to be talking all about cycle syncing. What it is, why I (and so many other women) do it, and my experience with it! If you follow me on Instagram then this isn’t the first time you are probably hearing about this. I discuss it a little bit on Instagram stories and even share some info in my posts. However, today I am getting into the details. I have gotten many questions regarding this topic so let’s just jump right in!

I originally wrote this blog post several months ago and have decided to come back to it and update my thoughts, feelings, and some new things I’ve experienced!

Cycle Syncing- What Is It?

+ My Experience

So, what is cycle syncing? Cycle syncing is syncing your everyday routine, meals, and workouts to your menstrual cycle. If you are familiar with the book Woman Code by Alisa Vitti then you may already be familiar with this. The author of this book developed an app called “my flo” which is the app you use when you cycle sync. The app breaks it down really simple and easy to understand.

To give you a quick run down of it, the woman’s body goes through four different cycle phases.

The first phase being your follicular phase, then ovulation, luteal, and ending with the menstrual phase. Each phase can be supported by the foods we eat, how we workout, social planning, and even completing tasks and organizing. The app has a calendar and tracks what phase you are in throughout the month. As you enter a new phase it notifies you and you can learn what your hormones are doing in that specific phase AND what you should be doing and eating to help support your body during that time. This app is amazing not only for your overall health but also for anyone struggling with their period or hormones.

For a better example, the first phase (follicular) is the phase when hormones are at low levels and effects on the brain include openness to trying out new things. During this phase you should be focusing on creativity and setting intentions and goals. Try something new for your workout and eat fresh, vibrant light foods. In this phase arousal is important during sex, so focus your attention on touching and massaging. This phase least about 7-10 days.

So why should we cycle sync?

Simple. We are essentially giving our bodies what they need during a specific time. More so, we are actually healing the body at a deeper level when we cycle sync.

In the fast paced world we live in, it is very easy to get influenced by society. In fact we are actually born into the world thinking we should eat, live, and workout a certain way so, we go on our way. In turn, over a long period of time, it throws our whole body out of whack. This disruption causes minor to severe health problems, including, but not limited to, bloat, infertility, heavy or missing periods, low libido, PCOS, skin issues, and so much more.

When we take the time to learn about how the woman’s body actually works and what we need to support it, we can heal ourselves from all of those problems. And we can also naturally track fertility and our cycle!

I won’t go into too much detail because I highly recommend you purchase and read the book, but I do want to share my experience with you.

Just about a year ago I took myself off of hormonal birth control. I took it for about five years and always just used it to not get pregnant when I was sexually active. I also thought I had to be on it to keep my period regular, but damn I was SO wrong. So, I stopped taking birth control and I didn’t really put much thought in to it. However, I wanted to still make sure my body was healing properly and I could track my cycle for obvious reasons.

Insert cycle syncing.

I heard many ladies talk about it so I decided to download the app. Little did I know there was an actual book to back up all of the tools this little app had to offer! So, if I am being honest, my first experience with cycling syncing SUCKED! I only went off of what they app told me and it made me flash back to my restrictive eating days. I laughed and thought “yeah right”!

Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I finally purchased the book and started reading it. There’s so much information in this book, let me tell ya, it’s incredible! I am learning things I never even knew! Not only that I’ve decided to give cycle syncing a try again!

So far it’s only been about a couple of months, but I can already tell a huge difference. My periods are much more tolerable, my energy levels have increased, and my blood sugar levels have even improved. I can feel in my body which phase I am in just by learning about signs and symptoms associated with each phase. This is just in the first month, too! I never thought I would be someone to willingly go off of the pill until I was ready for a baby, but expanding my knowledge on hormonal birth control and teaching myself about the proper ways to take care of my body has made allllll of the difference. I’m excited to see what happens once I become more familiar with the process!

Now that I actually have the knowledge and information, it is much easier to understand the app and give my body what it deserves. I thought I would update this blog post because my mindset toward cycle syncing has changed and I want to encourage every woman to give it a try! However, I will admit though, it does take some getting used to. So, don’t be discouraged if you feel overwhelmed or intimidated.
