Hi babes! I hope you are having a great week so far! Today on Devon Jade I am sharing something that I get a ton of questions about and I figured it would be easier to write a blog post that you call can refer back to whenever!
How I Ditched the Chemicals and Started Living a Toxic Free Life
If you have been following along on my journey then you probably already know how passionate I am about living a toxic free life. I am pretty open about it on my social media platforms and I love sharing healthy alternatives to everyday products we all typically use! A common question I get asked is why I decided to go toxic free and how I did it. Well, this post is to answer those questions and provide you with tips and tricks on how to start living a non toxic lifestyle!
Switching to toxic free living doesn’t have to be difficult, it’s just like adopting a healthy diet or fitness routine- it takes time, patience, and a willing to change for the better.
So WHY did I choose to go non toxic?
I believe we can always do more, do better for ourselves, our loved ones, and the environment. After having my eyes opened up via Young Living essential oils, I quickly realized how much toxins we put into our bodies every single day. Did you know the average female uses around 500 chemicals just in her morning routine? Crazy, right?! This includes hair and body products, make up, and perfume. I also learned that many of these chemicals can cause disturbances in the body such as hormone imbalances and allergies. These disturbances can appear like nothing, I.e a stuffy/runny nose, congestion, bloating, just to name a few. In fact the symptoms can be so mild that we don’t even realize there’s a problem. As someone who already has an auto immune disease (Celiac Disease) plus a bunch of other sensitivities, I was hit with the hard truth that some of these chemicals could be a huge contributor to my health problems.
HOW did I make the switch?
Like I said above, I realized all of the harm that comes from these chemicals from joining the amazing team that is Young Living essential oils. The first switched I made was using these magical little oils! I swapped out all of my candles for my diffuser, started making my own air freshener, multi purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, and basically anything else you can think of! I made small easy swaps and gradually made bigger changes as I educated myself.
However, I do have to say, everyone is different. Our bodies react to things very differently, we believe in various things, and our lifestyles are all very unique. Making healthier lifestyle changes will look different on everyone and everyone goes out their own pace. You can’t force anything on anyone, they will only make the change when they are ready.
Here are some of my top tips on how to make the switch to a non toxic lifestyle…
Start small. Some people can quit bad habits cold turkey with no issues. While that is great, that’s not always the case for others. If you are feeling overwhelmed switching your products to a cleaner alternative, start small. Pick one thing you use daily and replacing it with a non toxic alternative is the perfect start! For example, something that is an easy first switch is candles. Invest in some good quality essential oils and a diffuser. Instead of burning a candle that is known to be filled with harmful chemicals, pop a few drops of eo’s into your diffuser and call it a day! Easy peasy.
Educate yourself. There’s nothing wrong with getting inspired by others but don’t use something or swap out your most trusted products for something your favorite YouTuber posted about. Figure out what it is you want to know or learn and research the crap out of it. Educate yourself on which chemicals are harmful and which products contain those chemicals. Then, check the labels of your products!
Download the app “Think Dirty”. This can go in combination with the first two tips. This app is a great start. It’s easy to use and will inform you on how toxic a product is. Open the app, scan the barcode (or type in the product), and see its’ rating! 1 being the safest and 10 being the most harmful. Not only does it show you what products contain what, but you can see what chemicals are making the product harmful.
Find a reputable brand you TRUST. There are several brands out there that promote how “clean” and “safe” their products are, but until you do your research you can never be too sure. Before you spend a ton of money, research different brands and see if you can purchase sample sizes of their products. This ensures you know you like what you’re buying. This can take time but just be patient. There’s nothing worse than shelling out a ton of money on something that turns out to be crap! Been there, done that, it’s not fun!
I hope this answers any and all questions regarding living a toxic free lifestyle and how to take the leap! I plan on creating a post sharing all of my most loved, non toxic brands to help you navigate this corner of wellness a little better!
