Ladies raise your hand if you are lazy like me and HATE spending extra time in the shower washing your hair! Or maybe you’re like me because you like having clean hair but you don’t wash it everyday to keep it healthy. Either way, this post is for you, no matter if you wash your hair everyday, or once a week!
Part of going toxic free for me was not only watching the ingredients in the foods I eat but also in the products I use daily. This includes make-up, lotions, soaps, and basically any other beauty product you can think of…including dry shampoo. So the title of this post gives it away but today I am sharing with you my “Do-It-Yourself Dry Shampoo”! I am extra excited about this post because it is the first post in the “Beauty” section of my blog! I don’t post much about beauty, however, I have been getting a lot of questions about toxic free beauty so I figured why not add some of that into Devon Jade!
Dry shampoo was one of the last things I swapped out when I went toxic free. I had a full bottle of the “Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo” and I wasn’t about to waste all of that money! But once I emptied the bottle I was desperate for more because, like I said, I only wash my hair 1x a week!!!
So into the kitchen I went to make up a concoction that would not only soak up the oils in my hair but something that would clean it and also make it smell good. And today you get to make it too! Below I have showed you a step-by-step on how to make your own, toxic free, dry shampoo! So grab a shower cap, ladies, and ditch your shampoo and conditioner for a few days!
D.I.Y. Dry Shampoo
What You’ll Need
A small jar with a lid of some sort (make sure it can closes tightly) I used a small mason jar found at a craft store.
Corn starch (make sure it is Non GMO)
Take your jar and fill it with 1/2 a cup of corn starch and 1/2 a cup of baking soda
Add in 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil for pleasantly smelling (and clean) hair! (I used the essential oil ‘Sensation’ from Young Living because it has this beautiful floral, feminine scent. You can use whatever scent you love! Some essential oils that are great for your hair include Rosemary, Cedarwood, Lavender, and Tea Tree!)
*PRO TIPS* Ladies with darker hair- add in cacao powder so your roots don’t turn white! the more you add, the darker it’ll be!
Using a brush makes application 10x easier and mess free!
Corn starch adds volume to your hair since it is most likely flat from all of the oils weighing it down. It also helps absorb excess oils.
Baking soda cleans and refreshes your hair.
Essential oils are not needed but give an extra boost to your dry shampoo!
