A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils

Today I am sharing with you guys something that is near and dear to my heart. I feel like I begin all of my blog posts with that phrase, but everything I post/talk about are things that I’m very passionate about. So this week I will be sharing my love for essential oils with y’all.

If you know me in real life, and/or follow me on social media, then you probably know by now my dying love for these little bottles of magical liquid. I often share about them on my Instagram, as well as Facebook, and a second Instagram page I have specifically for all the oily things (@devonjadeoils). Once I noticed the rapid growth in using essential oils, I had this fiery urge to share everything I know, not only because it is a passion of mine, but because not many people know all there is to know about eo’s.

A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils

To start, real quick, a little background info on me and how I got started using essential oils. About a year and a half ago, a professor I had, back when I was in school for Nutrition Science (shout out to you Lisa if you are reading this, lol), reached out to me sharing her love for essential oils. At first I was extremely hesitant because I never thought I would find myself being part of a network marketing company and also because I knew very little about essential oils. After talking with her for a little bit I decided to do some of my own research. I read a ton of books and articles on essential oils and became instantly hooked. One thing that caught my attention was almost every article and book I read always mentioned the company Young Living. Young Living was the brand of essential oils Lisa had spoke to me about. I thought to myself “this company must be extremely reliable”. And it is! Soon after that, I joined this amazing team of other oily lovers and I haven’t looked back since. I am happy to say Young Living Essential Oils has changed my life for the better and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon!

AMAZING, DUH! But seriously. Essential oils are a naturally occurring oil in plants, flowers, herbs, etc. They are typically obtained through a process called distillation, however Young Living has a few different ways of obtaining their oils. Young Living has a Seed-to-Seal promise that ensures the quality of their products and that their customers are getting 100% pure essential oils with no chemicals, fillers, or fragrances. There is much more to this process but I don’t want to drain you of your energy on all of the science just yet 😉 I would be happy to make a post specifically about this, or feel free to message me! Once the oil passes the YL standards and is ready to be sold, each oil possesses a scent of the plant, flower, etc. it was obtained from.

Plain and simple, essential oils are better for you. I can only speak on the behalf of Young Living, but their essential oils are 100% pure, natural, and toxic free. Essential oils are used for SO many things including emotional support, immune support, gut health, stress, anxiety, and basically anything else you can think of! They enhance your life instead of taking away from it like those cleaning products under your sink or the Advil in your medicine cabinet. Which brings me to my next point, this company is not just essential oils. Young Living offers an insane, wide variety of products infused with essential oils to make you live your best life. Including dietary supplements, products for your babies and kiddos, and soooo much more! So my question to you is not why essential oils, but why NOT essential oils?! I now live a toxic free life thanks to Young Living.

Topically (diluted), diffuse, and inhalation.

Topically– when using essential oils it is important to learn about the specific oil you are using and for what. When you know this it’ll make it easy for you to determine how much you need to dilute an oil. Certain oils, like Peppermint, are considered ‘hot’ oils and may need more dilution than others. Some oils you will find that you may not even need to dilute them, however, always test an oil out diluted and on an area that won’t be noticed if there is a rash.

Diffuse– this is the most common method and the easier when just beginning. Depending on your space all you need is 2-4 drops of your essential oil and the room will smell AMAZING.

Inhalation– if you are in a pinch or somewhere that you can’t apply or diffuse your oils, simply opening them up and inhaling them works just as well! It is amazing how just smelling Lemongrass out of the bottle changes my mood in a flash!

You can also ingest SOME essential oils, given that they are 100% pure like YL. It is super important to know what oils you are using before doing so and always ask a medical profession beforehand.

Again, there is more in-depth information you may need to know before using essential oils. This post would be way too long if I poured out every single detail. There is a lot of science behind the process of obtaining the oil and why they work the way they do. This post was designed to help answer the basic questions I frequently get asked and to help guide anyone in the right direction.

Essential oils have drastically changed my life and I can’t thank Young Living enough for being such an amazing, and inspiring, company, and also Lisa who got me hooked on these products! If you are thinking about making some lifestyle changes please message me and I would be happy to help! I truly believe essential oils are magic!
